There’s a new Hong Kong sports complex opening soon! Kai Tak Sports Park is scheduled to open next year now that it has completed the installation of its exterior panels. This marks a significant milestone for the mega sports project where 85 per cent of the work has been finished.
Completion is expected by the end of 2024 with opening marked for 2025. The new stadium seats 50,000 spectators and draws inspiration from the theme of ‘Pearl of the Orient’. Keep reading to find out more about this new sporting venue.
The Kai Tak Sports Park is now in the final stages of completion
The exterior of the main stadium boasts 27,000 aluminium panels in triangular shapes. Using a three-layer spray technique, the colour shifts from blue to purple depending on daylight lighting and viewing angle. In addition, the panels have self-cleaning functionality and long-lasting durability. The entire installation process took eight months.
The construction is now in its final stages. Major facilities within the complex will be done in phases this year, in time for its 2025 opening. Other than the main stadium, the 28-hectare complex will also have an indoor sports centre that can accommodate up to 10,000 people. Meanwhile, its public sports ground can hold 5,000 people.
A new sporting venue to host local and international events
The new stadium will also help to promote Hong Kong as a hub for major international sports events. Upon completion and opening, the Kai Tak Sports Park will host the 15th National Games of China. Hong Kong will co-host the sporting event alongside Guangdong and Macau. The next edition of the Hong Kong Sevens will also take place in the new stadium next year.
