Is anyone else mourning the lack of widespread doughnut chains in Hong Kong? Well, we’ve got some good news: Japanese doughnut chain Mister Donut will be debuting in Hong Kong this year.
The doughnut chain plans to open sometime in October. According to job openings that have surfaced online, the first store is likely to be in the Yau Tsim Mong district. The move is part of Mister Donut’s expansion into the wider Asian region, where it has already opened in Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Last year, the chain entered the Singapore market, and now it has set its sights on Hong Kong.
Many people flock to the franchise for its signature Pon de Ring, a mochi doughnut. It provides a satisfying chew that you can’t find in other pastries. Hong Kongers often make a point to visit Mister Donut when travelling to Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. Some even import them just to get their hands on these addicting doughnuts.
Aside from the Pon de Ring, the chain also has other offerings. You can find regular doughnuts as well as French Crullers and Old-Fashioned doughnuts. Each type of doughnut comes with its own variety of flavours, providing endless options for customers to choose from. Classic flavours include honey, chocolate, and custard cream.
On top of that, Mister Donut in Japan is known for its enticing seasonal menus. Earlier this year, the franchise launched the “Sakura Mochitto Doughnuts,” depicting the life cycle of the cherry blossoms to celebrate sakura season. We can look forward to what seasonal and region-exclusive flavours Mister Donut Hong Kong will offer.
The arrival of Mister Donut is the result of an agreement between the parent company of Japan’s Mister Donut, Duskin Corporation, and Hong Kong’s Dragon Circle Enterprise Ltd. The enterprise is also responsible for managing fellow Japanese brand Chateraise.
With the upcoming arrival of Mister Donut in Hong Kong, many are questioning whether Krispy Kreme will make a return after its closure in 2008. If it does, perhaps the doughnut hole in our hearts (and the market) can finally be filled. Regardless, once October rolls around, you’ll find us stuffing ourselves with Pon de Rings.
