Video game developers have made a fortune out of the concept of remakes. Be it Rockstar Games, Electronic Arts or any of the studios under Microsoft and Sony, game studios have banked upon remakes to reuse their award-winning scripts and lure players for nostalgia’s sake.
While the formula works for some big developers, it has also backfired on some who tried to take shortcuts. Take Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition as a recent example where the publisher did a hasty job of making quick bucks out of a vintage game. The release was a disaster.
However, Electronic Arts’ remake of the original Dead Space received a warm response. Since remakes also happen to get sequels in this multi-million dollar industry, rumours of a Dead Space 2 remake started doing rounds on the internet and many assumed that EA would be secretly toiling away behind closed doors to make it happen.

Released in early 2023, the Dead Space remake was reported to have done well on the sales charts, pulling old-time fans as well as new gamers to the sci-fi horror survival game. Naturally, gamers started hoping for a sequel, fuelling rumours. However, based on all the chatter around the video game, the Dead Space 2 remake is not happening, at least for now.
Initial rumours had hinted about EA assigning its workforce to this project and work for the initial stages underway. However, following the lacklustre demand for a Dead Space remake, EA decided to scrap the project and reassign its talent elsewhere.

However, in an interaction with the media, EA’s spokespersons said there was no validity to the rumours surrounding the remake of Dead Space 2. EA Motive, the studio behind the remastering of the first game, has been busy with other video game projects for over a year and the Dead Space 2 remake isn’t on the list.

In another follow-up by Bloomberg, it was reaffirmed that EA Motive was secretly exploring ideas for a new instalment in the Dead Space franchise and the team spent a couple of months brainstorming. The intention was to chalk up an entirely new video game instead of doing another remake.
However, the development fizzled out and none of the plans were greenlit. The Dead Space remake failed to meet EA’s internal expectations, dwindling the studio’s faith in the franchise. The publisher eventually reassigned the developers to other projects.
Is EA ever going to remake ‘Dead Space 2’?
For the foreseeable future, a Dead Space 2 remake seems highly unlikely. The Dead Space franchise has been one of EA’s troubled assets ever since its inception in 2008. After 2013’s Dead Space 3, the American publisher decided to shelve the project for over a decade before considering and developing a remake of the original game in 2023. Upon release, critics and fans received the Dead Space remake well. It became the best-selling video game in the US in January 2023.
At the moment, industry insiders suggest that EA Motive is focused on the Battlefield franchise as well as the upcoming Marvel’s Iron Man video game, the latter expected to be released in 2025. Hence, it seems that the studio doesn’t have space to work on the remake of Dead Space 2. The future of the Dead Space franchise is uncertain for the time being.
