Bethesda’s space exploration role-playing game (RPG), Starfield, has garnered significant attention since its release in 2023. Long-time fans of Bethesda’s open-world games had awaited this game since it was announced, and they were not disappointed.

Following its success, Bethesda is set to release the first major expansion called Starfield: Shattered Space. This expansion will bring new gameplay features, an intriguing story, and enhanced visuals to fans of the original.

Bethesda revealed this DLC during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase on 9 June. The first trailer for the DLC took players to an unusual new planet taken over by a mysterious threat. As the protagonist explores it, they get attacked by certain creatures, and as panic sets in, the trailer cuts to the title card, leaving many questions unanswered.

Following its reveal, a lot of new information has dropped about Starfield: Shattered Space, from its story to its gameplay mechanics. Here’s everything you should know about this upcoming DLC.

‘Starfield: Shattered Space’ takes a different direction from the base game

When Bethesda released Starfield, most fans were excited to try this new game. It was unlike anything this developer had worked on before. Going from RPGs restricted to one world to a game that lets players jump from planet to planet was a big leap.

While it was a critical hit, some fans were left disappointed. The lack of sandbox-style explorable areas left players wanting more. Starfield was more of a space sim with RPG mechanics than Fallout or Skyrim in space. Still, Starfield is one of the most detailed and unique sci-fi games set in space out there.

But this time around, Bethesda has gone in a different direction. Creative director Todd Howard recently revealed that Starfield: Shattered Space is more like Fallout 4’s Far Harbor DLC.

This means the game will introduce a massive new area for players to explore. By doing this, Bethesda will also fix the biggest complaint fans had about Starfield: a lack of truly explorable locations.

‘Shattered Space’ gameplay and story details

Not much has been revealed about this game’s narrative yet, but one thing the trailer revealed was that players will uncover the mysteries of House Va’ruun. Regular fans would know that the House of Va’ruun is one of the most secretive factions in the game. Its members worship a deity known as the Great Serpent.

This means the setting of this DLC might be Va’ruun’kai, the homeworld of the House of Va’ruun.

When it comes to gameplay, it will play just like Starfield does. Quick first-person shooter combat mechanics, layered armour, and numerous unique weapons are all set to return.
