The announcement of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake created quite a buzz amongst gamers. This Prince of Persia remake had been a long time coming, as it was first announced in 2021 and promised to bring back the magic of the classic 2003 game with modern enhancements.
After three years of being in development hell, Ubisoft has once again announced the Prince of Persia remake at their June 2024 Ubisoft Forward event. This reveal came after a change in this title’s core development team.
Fans of the original game have been eagerly waiting for a full 3D Prince of Persia title since the release of 2010’s Forgotten Sands. The original 2003 game was celebrated for its innovative gameplay mechanics and engaging storyline; back then, it set a high bar for action-adventure games.
Will the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake achieve the same success? Look at everything we know about it; maybe you will get an answer.
The ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ remake was in limbo for a while
In 2021, when Ubisoft announced the Sands of Time remake, it was announced that Ubisoft Pune would play a crucial role in its development. But there was no update on this game beyond that announcement.
Some rumours suggested that the development of this remake was going through a lot of troubles due to unknown reasons, but no other updates came of it. Just when everyone thought this game was probably cancelled, Ubisoft announced it once again in 2024. It’s good to know that Ubisoft did not give up on it and just shifted the development to Ubisoft Montreal.
The game’s creative director, Michael McIntyre, suggests that the game, when previously announced, was just in the concept phase, and they decided to announce it again as it is now in full development.

The ‘Prince of Persia’ remake’s gameplay and visuals
When it comes to gameplay, Michael McIntyre told Ubisoft news that they are keeping some iconic things as they were in the original, including the wall running and the dagger. “We have things that are staying as-is, like the wall run, which is so iconic that we will try to match it as much as we can. The dagger as well. There are core elements of the original recipe that we respect and sanctify: time powers, the tone of the game, and the gravity-defying gameplay. But we modernize stuff like the level design, for example, and really enhance the scale of the world. We also vary the challenge a bit more,” said McIntyre.
This means they are going the way of the Dead Space remake. Developer EA Motive changed some of the level design in that game and made all the maps accessible without load screens, but kept core gameplay mechanics the same. This makes sense, too, as most hardcore fans would want their game as it is, but with improved visuals.
The game is reportedly being developed using Ubisoft’s Anvil engine. If that’s the case, fans can expect this to be as good as most of Ubisoft’s recent offerings. For reference, a fan can look at their most recent title in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but probably even better, given how that game is released much later.
Do we have a release date for the ‘Prince of Persia’ remake?
During the Ubisoft Forward announcement, Ubisoft made it clear that this new game will be released in 2026. They have not specified any months or other details yet.
We are expecting it to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, but it can only be confirmed once Ubisoft decides it’s good enough time for them to reveal these details.
Till then, hardcore Prince of Persia fans can check out The Lost Crown and The Rogue Prince of Persia; both games are available to purchase right now.
