The current generation Apple iPads is long in the tooth, and in a fast-paced world of gadgets where innovations happen faster than light travels, they seem outdated. Thankfully, the new iPads are just around the corner and based on all the leaked information from industry insiders, Apple might be bringing a major overhaul soon.
The best part? They are coming sooner than we’d all expected.
Just when we assumed that Apple’s next event announcement might be for the upcoming WWDC 2024 in June, the geniuses at Cupertino surprised us with another event scheduled for May 7 2024. The Let Loose event teaser logo hints at major announcements related to the iPad range.

While this may entice iPad fans across the world, it also hints at Apple’s plans for the WWDC event scheduled for a later stage.
As usual, Apple remains tight-lipped until CEO Tim Cook takes to the stage on May 7 to reveal what’s in store for us. Thankfully, we have a fair idea of what to expect from Apple’s latest event and without wasting a moment, let’s dive into everything we know about it.
Upcoming Apple May event: Everything we think will be announced

1. Next-gen iPad Pro
It has been a while since the iPad Pro has seen big changes. For 2024 and beyond, Apple is rumoured to give its flagship tablets a much-needed spec-bump to keep it ahead of its rivals.
Based on the leaks from industry insiders, Apple will be introducing its advanced 3nm M3 chips to the iPad Pro. This should raise the bar for raw processing performance on tablets, thereby offering a more powerful device to creators and professionals.
Another crucial upgrade for the iPad Pro is said to be OLED screens, which will be a first for the iPad range. The high refresh rate OLED screens could boost the user experience by a notable margin.
Apple is also expected to release next-gen variants of the Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, both of which are expected to be more versatile than ever.
2. New iPad Air
For those who find the iPad Pro a ‘bit too much’, the iPad Air has always been the go-to device. Offering an unrivalled price-to-performance ratio, the iPad Air M1 is great for performance seekers on a budget. For 2024 and beyond, Apple is rumoured to upgrade the iPad Air to make it an even better deal than ever.
Performance is one obvious area where the iPad Air could see a notable upgrade. The M1 chip from the outgoing model is expected to be phased out in favour of the newer M2 chip. There’s also a possibility of the M3 chip making it to the iPad Air, thus making it one of the most accessible devices with Apple’s 3nm chip.
While the overall design could remain identical to the M1 iPad Air, Apple could change the rear camera module design to accommodate an LED flash. The front camera is also expected to be moved to the side, thus allowing for a landscape orientation during video calls.
3. iPad Air 12.9-inch
Joining the iPad Air series will be a new 12.9-inch iPad Air. As the name suggests, it will essentially be an iPad Air with a larger 12.9-inch display and a bigger battery to compensate for the extra resolution. Unlike the standard model, the 12.9-inch iPad Air could get a miniLED display panel, thereby offering a superior visual experience over the compact 10.9-inch variant.
We hope that Apple gives this variant of the iPad Air a faster refresh rate. The chipset and other basic specifications could remain identical to the compact variant.
4. iPad 11th Gen
The base iPad received a makeover in 2022 and after 1.5 years, it’s due for an upgrade. The A14 Bionic chip from the iPhone 12 is likely to be replaced by the iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic chipset. This should give it a notable boost in performance and efficiency.
Apple could also include support for the new generation Apple Pencil that sticks to the side of the device for charging. The rest of the specifications are expected to remain identical to the outgoing model.
5. iPad Mini 7th Gen
Last but not least, we expect Apple to revamp the iPad Mini. Released originally in 2021, the iPad Mini has been left untouched for a long time. The A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 has served it well for managing basic tablet duties but in 2024, Apple could be giving it the newer A16 Bionic chip from the iPhone 15.
We also expect the Cupertino giant to revamp other crucial bits such as the screen, battery life and support for the newer generation Apple Pencil stylus.
