The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver series has been a beloved video game franchise since its initial release in 1999. For the uninitiated, this series is known as the cornerstone of action-adventure gaming and is revered for its gripping storytelling, unique gameplay mechanics and atmospheric world design. Therefore, news of a Soul Reaver remaster has understandably excited long-time fans and new players alike.
Rumours of the Soul Reaver remaster have been circulating for years, but recent leaks have given fans more hope. At the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2024, branding for the Soul Reaver remaster was spotted on some merchandise. While we are obviously excited about getting any remaster at all, it’s a bit disappointing that we won’t be getting a complete remake like the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
Nevertheless, if you have been waiting for a remaster for more than a decade, scroll on as we delve into all the details about this upcoming Soul Reaver remaster collection, including its anticipated release date, possible platforms and gameplay enhancements.
‘Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered’ gameplay details
In the upcoming Soul Reaver remaster, players will control a vampire named Raziel in the third person. As they embark on an adventurous journey, players will go through various levels, phasing through two separate planes of existence. Both planes have their advantages and disadvantages. In the material plane, Raziel can interact with doors and switches. On the other hand, in the spectral plane, he can pass through things and even walk on water!
Both realms also have their own versions of enemies. In the human realm (the material plane), you fight peasants, vampire hunters and vampire worshippers. In the spectral realm, however, your enemies are the feral scavengers of The Underworld known as Sluagh, and Wraiths who are born when vampires die.
Besides hacking and slashing the aforementioned enemies, you’ll also be solving block puzzles with certain time limits.
When it was released, the first Soul Reaver game was called “one of the best looking console games yet made” by IGN. Given its, well, legacy (pun not intended), the fact that the developers are bringing these games to the current generation consoles is pretty exciting.

‘Soul Reaver’ remaster: What about the visuals?
These games were first released back for the PlayStation 1 and 2. In other words, it’s been a while (more than two decades!) since they first came out. As such, the fact that the developers have decided to call them ‘remasters’ rather than ‘remakes’ means we can expect some framerate boosts and upscaled resolutions.
While remasters usually come with a fresh coat of paint, they are mostly the same old title that gamers played years ago. Nevertheless, we are hoping the developers will produce something akin to Metroid Prime: Remaster to give us a couple of well-polished remasters.

Currently, no announcements have been made regarding the launch or release date of these games. All we can do is wait for the developers to give us an update.
As far as the platforms are concerned, these titles were originally released on the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Dreamcast and PC. However, just like any other remaster these days, we are expecting these games to show up on almost every platform possible, including Nintendo’s unannounced new console, the Switch 2.
