All The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition Key Specifications According To The Leaks And Rumours

Samsung isn’t done with its superstar launches for 2024. Going by the latest rumours, there’s a new Galaxy Z Fold coming out later in the year and it could shut everyone critical of Samsung being not innovative enough. Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition.

Bear with us before you assume this to be a regular Galaxy Z Fold 6 with a unique paint job. Despite a generic name, this upcoming version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is introducing some significant hardware changes that could change how we perceive Samsung’s flagship smartphone. For those seeking a hint, this phone is the same handset that we have known so far as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, upon launch, got mixed reviews for making little changes to the tried-and-tested formula. Critics and consumers were disappointed with the bulk of the handset and almost no notable changes to the camera department despite no reduction in price. Rivals like Honor, Vivo, Google and OnePlus have been making huge strides with regards to refinement and modernisation.

Hence, an improved version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 was expected to show up next year. However, the rumours and leaks hinted at Samsung bringing a more advanced iteration of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 sooner than expected and the specs sheet could leave many impressed. Initially predicted to be called the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim, this foldable could send competing brands in the segment back to the drawing boards.

While we are yet to get any details on the launch date and its potential pricing, here’s a compilation of everything we know about the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition.

There are three core improvements that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition is rumoured to bring to the table:

Design

The current Galaxy Z Fold 6 looks handsome but compared to other foldables out there, it sticks out with its thickness. In fact, the Fold 6 is thicker than the newly announced Honor Magic V3 and the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

This is where the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition comes in.

Based on the leak, this version of the Fold 6 will be slimmer at 11.5mm of thickness, which is 0.6mm less than the vanilla Galaxy Z Fold 6. The reduction in the thickness can be attributed to the removal of the digitiser, which also means there won’t be any support for the S Pen stylus.

Quite weird for a ‘Special Edition’ phone to miss out on a feature available on the standard model!

Display

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition will also witness a change in its display sizes and aspect ratio. It is said that the main display will now measure 8 inches, which is marginally larger than the standard Fold 6’s 7.6-inch display. More screen estate on a book-style foldable phone is always welcome, especially for those who like to multitask with 3-4 apps in windowed mode.

When folded shut, consumers are likely to be treated to a smaller 6.5-inch display. Compared to the standard Galaxy Z Fold 6, this is larger by 0.2 inches. It remains to be seen whether Samsung manages to achieve the increase in screen dimensions by expanding horizontally or vertically. Phones like the OnePlus Open and Pixel 9 Pro Fold are getting closer to offering a rectangular-shaped display.

Since the Fold 6 Special Edition is all about trimming flab, we don’t have any hopes of seeing an under-display fingerprint scanner on the main or cover screens.

Camera

Lastly, we expect the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition to do something about its camera setup. The standard Fold 6 borrows its camera hardware from the vanilla Galaxy S24 and while that’s potent enough for casual photography, it can’t match up to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra and other existing foldables in the market.

With the Fold 6 Special Edition though, the rumours suggest that Samsung could be replacing the 50-megapixel primary sensor in the main camera with the upgraded 200-megapixel sensor we see on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. An upgrade in the primary camera sensor could bring notable imaging and videography improvements, which could help it survive against the likes of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Honor Magic V3.

When and where is the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition launching?

Considering the latest developments on this front, we expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition sometime in September. Don’t be surprised if Samsung tries to steal the limelight of Apple’s 9 September launch event by announcing this upgraded foldable the next day.

That said, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition could barely make an impact on Samsung’s foldable lineup in the global market. It is said that Samsung could reserve this slimmer Galaxy Z Fold 6 for the Chinese and Korean markets, skipping large-scale global regions like Europe and South Asia.

While this could be disappointing for those expecting a slimmer Galaxy Z Fold 6 coming out later in the year, it also points towards where Samsung could be heading with next year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7.
