Wolverine, the ferocious member of the X-Men, has been a favourite among comic book and video game enthusiasts for a long time. His unbreakable adamantium claws and remarkable healing make him the perfect candidate for a solo video game protagonist. If you’re someone who also believes that, our list of the best Wolverine games will impress you, especially the titles where he takes centre stage as the protagonist.

There have been some excellent Marvel game releases over the years. Wolverine has been featured in almost all of them. While some were based on the X-Men, others featured the Avengers as the main driving force. There have been very few games with Wolverine as a standalone protagonist, though.

While their numbers are few, these games allow fans to get in those heavy boots of Wolverine and unleash his beastly powers.

Now that Logan/Wolverine has been cinematically resurrected with 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, let’s dive into the best Wolverine games out there that will allow you to become the character and experience some well-written narratives.

The best Wolverine games every X-Men fan should play

1. Wolverine: Adamantium Rage

Genre: Action, Platformer
Release year: 1994
Platforms: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Sega Genesis

Released on two different systems with some tweaks, this 2D platform games guide players through multi-floored levels. Players can attack enemies with Wolverine’s claws and even solve various puzzles. In the SNES version, players must destroy a set number of enemies before they can access the next area. In the Genesis version, players get punished for wasting too much time as Elsie-Dee appears on-screen and kills the Wolverine.

Both versions feature a separate set of moves; SNES players can only do a single claw attack and have the ability to climb walls and ceilings and even perform high jumps. Genesis players can perform multiple moves, including double jumps and even lunge attacks. These are both excellent and looked pretty good for their generation.

2. X2: Wolverine’s Revenge

Genre: Action, Beat’em Up
Release year: 2003
Platforms: PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, PC

A third-person action game with stealth mechanics inspired by Metal Gear Solid, Wolverine’s Revenge left no stone unturned in offering a variety of gameplay mechanics. It even featured the likes of Mark Hamill and Patrick Stewart as voice actors, playing Wolverine and Professor X, respectively.

Besides the usual punch, kick and side tackle moves, players can even retract or extend Wolverine’s adamantium claws. They fight various armoured enemies and mutants as they make their way to bosses like Sabretooth, Magneto, Wendigo, Lady Deathstrike and Juggernaut. It is a very detailed game with lots to love and some barebones stealth mechanics that everyone wishes weren’t there in the first place.

3. X-Men: The Official Game

Genre: Beat’em Up, Action
Release year: 2006
Platforms: PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS

This game worked as a bridge between X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), focusing on Logan, Iceman and Nightcrawler. This game even gives fans an explanation for why Nightcrawler was missing from the third movie.

Players control the three characters through different types of missions, fighting hordes of enemies, platforming through levels and controlling the ice slide. Wolverine, true to his comic self, heals small wounds easily; he even has a fury bar that increases his regeneration rate and strength. Some said this was the first game that featured pretty much all of Wolverine’s powers, just as they were in the comics.

4. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Genre: Action, Hack-and-Slash
Release year: 2009
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii

Many fans suggest that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the best Wolverine game yet and they are not wrong in saying this. Based on the movie of the same name, the game was also released in 2009. Inspired by the likes of God of War and Devil May Cry, this game allows Logan to deal brutal damage to his enemies using his claws.

When he receives damage, he loses his clothes and suffers visible wounds that heal over time. This is a game with a mature rating and that’s why he can brutally and graphically slice through his enemies and even get all bloody after receiving enough damage. If you are going to play one video game featuring Wolverine, this is the game you should play.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is so popular among fans that they are continuously hoping for Insomniac Games to take inspiration from this game when developing the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive title Marvel’s Wolverine

This might not be a very long list, but each title on this list represents how developers have slowly built up to make the perfect game starring Logan. Playing through them can no doubt be a nostalgic experience. If you want more, there’s always a bunch of Marvel games you can try featuring the other superheroes.
