The newest Korean venture of popular streaming platform Netflix is an unscripted, reality show titled The Influencer. It features 77 participants — with varying niches and following — each of whom will navigate a series of ‘shocking’ and difficult challenges to come out on top. Here’s what we know so far.
Too-good-to-be-true tropes and tales set in worlds unknown might be at the heart of the Hallyu wave — but viewers are turning to settings closer to reality lately. Take for instance, the recent success of My Name is Gabriel with Ji Chang-wook and Park Bo-gum or that of longtime favourites like Single’s Inferno, Physical: 100, and The Devil’s Plan. Adding to this lineup of unscripted Korean shows is The Influencer — set to drop on Netflix this August. In it, a set of well-known participants will put their skills to the test to see who can exert the most power over social media. Here’s all about it.
The Influencer will show South Korean influencers battling it out for top honours
Although not much is known about the show so far, Netflix recently dropped a teaser which sees some of the most popular influencers face challenges head-on. This includes the likes of makeup icon and YouTuber Risabae, travel content creator Pani Bottle, filmmaker and YouTuber Jin Yong-jin, and fitness expert Shim Euddeum, amongst others. Over 77 participants with a combined total of 120 million followers across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and other similar platforms — across generations — will work towards being crowned ‘the best influencer.’
‘Enter a world where attention and influence are equal to worth and power,’ the teaser states — as visuals of the participants sporting a neckband declaring their following while getting through survival tests flicker by. Netflix quotes the producer Lee Jae-seok as saying, “I thought it would be interesting to gather influencers, divided by algorithms, in one place.” He promises plenty of entertainment.
The Influencer will drop on Netflix on 6 August.
