‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 5: Potential Plot, Cast And More

With its curtailed season 4 and a finale that felt, well, quite final, fans of the popular superhero TV series The Umbrella Academy have been wondering whether there will be a season 5 or if this is really goodbye for the Hargreeves. The show has been a hit for Netflix ever since it debuted its season 1 in 2019, but the conclusive tone of season 4 has sparked speculation. Here’s everything we know about a potential fifth season so far.

The finale of season 4, titled “End of the Beginning”, wrapped up the story of the Hargreeves in a poignant and sort of unexpected way. The Umbrella Academy season 4 debuted with all six episodes on 8 August 2024. The previous three seasons of the show have 10 episodes each.

Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way (writer) and Gabriel Bá (artist) published by Dark Horse Comics, the series was created by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, known for MCU TV show Moon Knight (2022).

Spoilers ahead!

Has The Umbrella Academy been renewed by Netflix for a season 5?

The short answer is, no; at least not yet. Netflix has not made any official announcement at the moment. It also feels likely that the tale of Hargreeves, known in the fandom as the Brellies, is done.

The Umbrella Academy’s finale is pretty definitively ending the story

The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 6 ends with Viktor (played by Elliot Page), Luther Hargreeves (played by Tom Hopper), Diego (played by David Castañeda), Allison Hargreeves (played by Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (played by Robert Sheehan), Five (played by Aidan Gallagher) and Lila (played by Ritu Arya) sacrificing themselves to restore the one true timeline (the Sacred Timeline in MCU lingo). Since they were anomalies and should not have existed in the first place, their complete and utter erasure from existence was the only way to set things right. So, they really did die.

Does the post-credits scene of The Umbrella Academy promise a new future?

While we see Marigolds, the superpower-bestowing substance, blossoming in the post-credits scene, it doesn’t mean the Hargreeves are alive again. In fact, Blackman made it so clear that this scene was only meant to make the send-off a little more ambiguous.

In an interview with Netflix, he said, “You can assume many things from that. We can assume that some essence of Marigold still exists somewhere in the world. It may do nothing ever again. And it could just be flowers, or it could be what’s left of them because there happen to be eight flowers. And a couple of them kind of turn into each other. But I’m leaving it to the audience to decide what it really means. Does that mean there could be more of the Umbrella Academy, or is it just that a tiny bit of their essence does go on?”

The only way The Umbrella Academy may potentially return is via a spinoff or a reboot. Then again, if Netflix deems the show too profitable to just end, it might renew it anyway.
