Pachinko season 1, which was released in 2022, garnered critical acclaim, becoming ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a rating of 97 per cent. It received praise for its masterful execution and secured 11 international awards, including a Peabody and an American Film Institute Award.

Season 2 is expected to continue the story of Sunja (Youn/Kim Min-ha), the protagonist of the sprawling and deeply moving story as she becomes the centre of a Korean family’s struggles and triumphs across four generations spanning almost 80 years.

The story follows Sunja, a woman in a small fishing village in Korea, who becomes pregnant by a wealthy, married man named Koh Hansu (Lee). As her life crumbles around her, she is forced to marry a sickly minister named Isak Baek (Noh) who takes her to Japan for a better life. She faces discrimination in Japanese society, which views Koreans as outsiders.

Season 1 of the show oscillated between the early 20th century and the 1980s. The first episode started in the mid-1910s and ended with events following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake in Japan. It is, therefore, expected that the new season will be set through the 1920s to the 1930s or beyond, and follow the same back-and-forth pattern.

The release date announcement teaser of the upcoming Pachinko season shows the actors dancing to the tune of “(I’d) Wait a Million Years,” the 1969 hit single by American rock band The Grass Roots, throwing a hint that the period between 1950s through the 1960s could be the focus.
