Netflix’s workplace comedy series Unstable just returned to the streaming platform for its second season on 1 August 2024 and fans are already rooting for season 3.
Starring the real-life father and son duo of Rob and John Owen Lowe, the show revolves around unassuming youngster Jackson Dragon (played by John Owen), who must reconnect with his arrogant tech-mogul father Ellis Dragon (portrayed by Rob) to help save him and his company from a potential doom following the demise of his mother.
Playing with the rich family in distress formula, earlier seen in Netflix’s Schitt’s Creek – which starred another real-life father-son duo, Eugene and Dan Levy – Unstable ticks the right boxes due to the undeniable chemistry between the two leads. It offers a new take on the workplace comedy genre seen in hit sitcoms like Suits.
The debut season of the series premiered in March 2023, and the recently launched second season further explores the comedic elements established in the first. The complex relationship between Jackson and Ellis seems evolved, yet exhibits the same dangerously co-dependent dynamic.
With Ellis’ legal issues now behind him, the self-absorbed CEO turns his ambitions toward a more significant goal: the Presidency of the United States. This unexpected development not only heightens the intrigue surrounding the potential storyline for season 3 but also makes it absolutely necessary.
So, what’s next for the Dragons and their empire in the show? Here’s everything we know about Unstable season 3, from its renewal status to the potential plot and release date.
Potential plot of ‘Unstable’ season 3
In an interview with Variety, Rob and John Owen Lowe shared some exciting hints about possible directions for a potential third season.
John Owen envisions Ellis not caring much about his actual debate and more on preparing his son Jackson for a hypothetical “First Boy” debate against his opponent’s child in season 3.
“In exploring where a potential third season would go, our brains immediately went to Ellis not caring much about the actual debate that he’ll have to have with his opponent. His ego would inform him that that won’t really be an issue, but that he will heavily focus on the potential of a ‘First Boy’ debate against his opponent’s child. So he will be preparing Jackson heavily for that, and feeling like he needs to be incredibly involved,” he shared in the interview.
This storyline may reflect Ellis’ ego and desire to assert himself in Jackson’s life, with politics providing a new platform for their dynamic.
Rob echoed this sentiment and spirit, suggesting that having children of political candidates debate each other could be a compelling plotline. He exclaimed, “By the way, it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard. I think we could learn a lot about our candidates by having their kids debate each other. I’m actually not kidding!”
John Owen also touched upon what Ellis running for president could mean for his character, saying, “Anything is possible.”
So, Ellis’ campaign will likely take up a chunk of season 3’s story, and he will probably rely on Jackson for support (both emotionally and as a campaign worker).

But has ‘Unstable’ season 3 actually been renewed?
Since the second season of Unstable is still new, a third season has not yet been officially greenlit.
However, the show has already made a big impact by securing a spot in the Netflix Top 10 charts in the U.S. and several other countries. This is a positive sign for the show’s future. If Unstable season 2 continues to perform well, it could lead to a third season soon.
Who could make the cast of ‘Unstable’ season 3?
If season 3 gets a renewal, the father-son duo of Rob and John Owen Lowe will reprise their roles for sure. Other characters’ return is less certain, but Sian Clifford’s Anna and Aaron Branch’s Malcolm have also been integral parts of seasons 1 and 2, so they will likely return for season 3. Iris Apatow will also reprise her character of Georgia (Anna’s ex-stepdaughter, who is an intern at Dragon).
The previous two seasons also added new characters, and season 3 won’t be any different. However, we don’t have any information on the new additions yet.
Do we have a release date for ‘Unstable’ season 3?
The show is yet to be officially renewed for a third season, so a release date is something too soon to be asking for.
The same holds true for the trailer or teaser of Unstable season 3. Fans must exercise patience before they get to catch a glimpse of that.
Meanwhile, season 2 of the show is currently streaming on Netflix.
