Popular in recent times as the company that sued Apple, Masimo is now looking to make the headlines for its own offering. The medical technology company’s newest product, the Freedom watch, made an appearance at the CES 2024. But how is this smartwatch by Masimo different from all the existing ones? Let’s find out.
The California-based health tech brand broke the internet when it filed a patent infringement case against Apple watches. Two of the latter’s models, the Series 9 and the Ultra 2, were stripped of the blood oxygen monitoring feature as an aftermath of this lawsuit. It is, therefore, interesting to see that very feature becoming the USP of Masimo’s Freedom smartwatch.
So, without further ado, let us dive deep into everything we know about the Masimo Freedom smartwatch, including the specifications of the watch, its price and more.
A close look at Freedom by Masimo
Masimo smartwatch’s specifications
The Masimo Freedom smartwatch has a circular display with a unique touch bar on the right side which you can use to scroll up and down to navigate. On the left, there is a small button to select items in the Freedom interface. With a diameter of 46 millimetres, it is likely to feel a tad chunky on the wrist.
According to the reports, the prototype that was spotted at the CES 2024 in Las Vegas came with a leather strap, albeit the renders released by Masimo sport a rubber strap. Therefore, it is probably safe to assume that the watch will come in both strap variants.
However, what makes it different from Apple’s watches is that the Masimo model does not have a digital crown. In addition, it also lacks a rotating bezel.
What features will be available in the Masimo smartwatch?
Being a product of a med-tech brand, it comes as no surprise that the Masimo Freedom watch is centred around health functionality. For starters, the device comes with a blood oxygen monitoring feature which is different from the ones offered by its competitors.
Eugene Goldberg, the president of Masimo’s consumer health division, said that the company’s blood oxygen monitoring technology is more accurate than its competitors as it takes into account a host of factors such as motion, low perfusion, skin pigmentation and poor blood flow.
Apart from monitoring SpO2 levels, the Freedom watch can track the wearer’s hydration, respiration, pulse rate, step count and sleep time. Most of these features are found in the smartwatches made by other companies, but Masimo’s marketing pitch is centred around higher accuracy as compared to its competing brands.
When will the Masimo Freedom watch be available for purchase and how much will it cost?
Reports suggest that the Masimo Freedom watch will be available for people to buy in the first half of 2024. The Masimo watch is priced at USD 999 (around HKD 7,811), which is USD 200 more than the costliest Apple smartwatch, i.e. the Ultra 2.
